Energy Tariff Experts (ETE) is presently looking to add an entry level research analyst to our growing team. ETE is a small Boston-based consulting company that provides its clients with the technical expertise needed to navigate evolving wholesale and retail energy markets. The niche nature of ETE’s offerings and current market landscape means a fast-paced work environment and ample opportunity to learn. A description of the position, tasks, expectations, and desired qualifications are detailed below.

Research analyst - energy

ETE seeks a research analyst who will support the team by conducting the following tasks:

  • Track utility rate filings for electric, natural gas, and water and capture relevant rates and rate features as they are updated.

  • Produce documentation regarding utility rate filings including cadence of filings, filing types, and underlying cost drivers. This documentation should be sufficient to support transfer of knowledge to other staff and/or support eventual outsourcing of data collection.

  • Build historical rate datasets using information from utility regulator dockets for rates outside of current coverage

  • Support consultants engaged in rate case proceedings by tracking and organizing discovery requests

  • Perform basic rate analysis in Excel to assist in tariff optimization projects

  • Organize and clean datasets as needed to support consultant analysis

  • Support analysts and consultants in primary research projects on a variety of energy matters.

  • Create and organize a document log of outgoing deliverables

It is expected that the successful applicant will develop an expertise in retail utility rates and be able to eventually transition to a role as an analyst or manage a data collection function supported by automation and external offshore resources.  

Desired qualifications

A successful applicant will have the following characteristics

  • A keen interest in energy and public policy and a desire to advance energy efficiency and renewables

  • Basic proficiency or higher in Excel and PowerPoint

  • Technical writing skills

  • Curiosity to deeply understand the energy sector

  • A long attention span and rigorous attention to detail

  • Patience and mindfulness in approaching difficult research tasks

For college graduates, we are interested in a broad range of degree types including, but not limited to: economics, energy systems, earth/environmental science, engineering, government, public policy, business, or liberal arts (specifically liberal arts degrees that involve extensive reading, research, and writing.) We also welcome non-traditional candidates who have strong writing and research skills.

This job is located in Boston and expectations are that employee would be present in the office approximately 3-4 days per week on average.
